SecureMe Password Security
SecureMe is an application designed to securely store the logon/password information that is necessary in our internet connected world. In fact so many different systems now require us to "register" or "create user accounts" that many people just use the same logon/password on many of those systems. This is not a good idea. If just one of the many systems we use gets compromised, then all the systems we use are at risk, maybe even a system that has our financial data (boo, hiss). Ok so if we create unique accounts for every system we interact with then how are we supposed to remember all that information?
A Password Manager That Uses Encryption.
SecureMe uses both obfuscation and encryption to hide and render your logon/password information unreadable to unwanted, prying eyes. SecureMe stores the logon, password, and system identifying information so that it can be easily recalled. It allows the user to add new logon accounts, delete unneeded accounts, and save that information so that it will be available if needed in the future. Oh yes there is a catch here... before SecureMe saves your precious information to your computer's hard disk, it uses a secret 3DES encryption key to turn your information into unreadable ciphertext.
Does SecureMe Guarantee The Security Of My Logon Information?
No, the only truly secure system is one that never gets used. If you don't plug your computer into the electrical outlet and turn it on and you keep it locked up in a bomb shelter, maybe only then is the system secure. Even then an earthquake might destroy it. SecureMe will make it much more difficult for other people to get at your logon information and by not using the same logon and password for every system you access you will be increasing the security of your online identity.
How Much Does It Cost And Where Can I Get It?
SecureMe is free. In fact it is really free. I won't even ask you for your email address. You can download it here. If you want to make a donation, I promise I won't throw your money into a trashcan on the side of the road and it would probably encourage me to write more freely available software. Important Information About SecureMe
If you choose to download and use SecureMe there are some things you need to be sure of. The first thing you need to ensure is that the use of Cryptography is not illegal where you live. Some countries restrict the use of Cryptography, if you live there, you cannot use SecureMe. SecureMe is a Java application that was written using Sun Microsystems's Java version 1.6 update 3. If you are using earlier versions of Java, you will need to update to this version. You can download this by clicking here and selecting the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 3. Once it finishes downloading do not forget to run it so that your Java environment gets updated.
